How Grocery Lists Are Generated from Your Meal Plan
Your Smart Shopping List turns your Weekly Plan into one clean, aisle-organized list — automatically. Building and editing your list is part of the free foundation: it's yours forever, with no ads, ever.
How Generation Works
Your Smart Shopping List builds itself from your Meal Tiles — the labeled workspaces on your Weekly Plan, like "Taco Tuesday" or "Weeknight Dinners." As you add recipes to your Meal Tiles, the list updates on its own. Here's what happens behind the scenes:
1. Auto-aggregates from your Meal Tiles — pulls every ingredient from every recipe across all your Meal Tiles into one place.
2. Consolidates duplicates — if chicken breast appears in three different recipes, it combines all three quantities into one line item, so you only look for it once.
3. Scales to your servings — quantities match the household servings you set (you can plan for 2, 4, or 6; new accounts default to 4).
4. Organizes by aisle — groups items by store section (Produce, Meat & Seafood, Dairy, Pantry, etc.) so you shop top-to-bottom without backtracking.
5. Stays store-aware — the list reflects the grocery store(s) you follow, so sections line up with how your store is actually laid out.
The result: one organized list — no duplicates, no guessing.
It cascades when you change your plan
Your list isn't a one-time snapshot. Edit a recipe's servings, swap a recipe in a Meal Tile, or remove a meal, and the Smart Shopping List cascades the change automatically — quantities re-calculate and consolidations update on their own. You never have to regenerate from scratch.
Editing Your Smart Shopping List
The list is fully yours to adjust before you shop:
Add items
- Tap + Add Item
- Type the ingredient name
- Choose quantity and unit (lbs, cups, count, etc.)
- Pick which aisle it belongs to
Remove items
- Swipe left on any item and tap Delete
- Or tap the item and uncheck it
Adjust quantities
- Tap any item and change the number or unit
- Handy when you want extra pasta or less spinach than calculated
Move items between aisles
- Tap an item and reassign its section
- Helps if your store's layout differs from the default
Mark items as purchased
- Check items off as you shop, in-app or at the store
- Checked items drop to the bottom so you stay focused on what's left
Understanding the Aisles
Your list is sorted into typical store sections for faster shopping:
- Produce — vegetables, fruit, fresh herbs
- Meat & Seafood — chicken, beef, fish, shellfish
- Dairy & Eggs — milk, cheese, yogurt, eggs
- Frozen — frozen vegetables, ice cream, frozen proteins
- Pantry — dry goods, canned items, oils, vinegars
- Spices & Condiments — salt, pepper, hot sauce, soy sauce
- Beverages — juice, tea, coffee
- Other — anything miscellaneous
Because your list is store-aware, these sections track the grocery store(s) you follow. If an item lands in the wrong aisle for your store, just move it.
Shop Smarter (PrepSmart+)
Building and editing your Smart Shopping List is free, forever. Shop smarter is one of the four features included with PrepSmart+ ($4.99/mo or $39.99/yr, with a 7-day free trial): instead of an awkward "0.7 lbs," your quantities round to the amounts stores actually sell, so your list matches what's on the shelf. The free list still gives you precise totals — Shop smarter just makes them shopping-cart-ready.
Why Consolidation Matters
Without consolidation, your list might show:
- Chicken breast (Monday dinner): 1.5 lbs
- Chicken breast (Tuesday lunch): 0.75 lbs
- Chicken breast (Thursday): 1 lb
That's three trips down the same aisle. After consolidation:
- Chicken breast: 3.25 lbs
One search, one stop, done.
Ingredient Substitutions
If the list includes something you'd rather skip (say, cilantro), you can:
- Delete it from the list, or
- Replace it by adding a substitution
The change only affects this list — your Weekly Plan and the underlying recipes stay exactly as they are for future use.
Exporting Your List
Once your list is ready, you can:
- Print it for paper shopping
- Share it with your household
- Hand it off to Instacart — exporting your shopping list to Instacart is in development, so you can carry it straight into your cart (this is a handoff of your list, not live checkout)
Tips for Smart Shopping
Shop ingredients, not recipes — your list tells you what to buy, not how to cook. Just follow the aisles.
Check what you already have — before you head out, uncheck anything that's already in your pantry.
Customize for your store — move items into the aisles that match your store, and add staples specific to how you cook.
