Filtering Recipes by Diet Type, Allergens, and Preferences
In PrepSmart, your diet isn't just a filter you flip on and off — it's the organizing principle for your whole experience. PrepSmart supports 25+ diet types and growing, and the one you choose shapes your entire Food World: the recipes, creators, brands, and stores you see. It's all free, and it's built around what you can eat — your YES list — not what you "should."
Your Food World Starts With Your Diet
When you set up your account, you pick one diet type. That single choice filters your Food World so you only see recipes that fit how you eat — no scrolling past foods that aren't for you.
- Single-select in onboarding. You choose your diet from one continuous list. Pick the one that fits best.
- It reshapes the whole app. Your diet flows through Explore, your Weekly Plan, your Recipe Box, and your Smart Shopping List — everywhere, automatically.
- Change it anytime — nothing is deleted. Switching your diet re-filters your Food World; it never erases your saved recipes, Meal Tiles, or plans. Your work stays put. (See "Changing Your Diet" below.)
You also get a small set of Starter Recipes — a fixed, free, diet-matched set included with every account so your Food World is never empty on day one.
The 25+ Supported Diet Types
PrepSmart includes recipes across 25+ diet types and growing, including:
- Keto
- Vegan
- Vegetarian
- Mediterranean
- Low Carb
- Paleo
- Gluten Free

- AIP (Autoimmune Protocol)

The full list appears as one continuous flat list when you choose your diet — just scroll. There's no "see all" toggle to hunt for, and there's a request a diet row at the bottom if yours isn't there yet (which is why the list keeps growing).
Each recipe is tagged with the diets it supports, so recipes that fit more than one diet show up no matter which one you follow.
Changing Your Diet
Your diet can change as your life does, and PrepSmart is built for that.
- Go to Settings > Dietary Preferences
- Tap your current Diet Type
- Choose a new one from the list
- Tap Save
Your Food World re-filters instantly to match. Nothing is deleted — your Recipe Box, Meal Tiles, and Weekly Plan all stay. If a recipe already in your plan no longer matches your new diet, we'll simply flag it so you can swap it for something that does.
Adding or Removing Allergens
Alongside your diet, you can exclude allergens so anything containing them is hidden from your Food World entirely.
To update your allergen list:
- Go to Settings > Dietary Preferences
- Under Allergen Exclusions, tap Add or Remove
- Check the items you want to exclude
- Tap Save
Common allergens:
- Peanuts
- Tree nuts (almonds, walnuts, cashews, etc.)
- Shellfish
- Fish
- Dairy
- Eggs
- Gluten
- Soy
- Sesame
- Sulfites
You're not limited to this list — if you need to exclude something specific, you can add a custom item.
Excluded Allergens vs. Allergen Flags
Excluded allergens (set in your profile):
- Recipes containing excluded items won't show up at all
- Safety-critical — keeps off-limits ingredients out of your Food World
Allergen flags (shown on recipe cards):
- Small tags noting common allergens a recipe contains
- Helpful if you want to spot something at a glance and swap an ingredient
- Example: a recipe flagged "Contains Nuts" is easy to catch so you can substitute
Narrowing Things Down While You Browse
Your diet does the heavy lifting, but in Explore you can refine further with quick filters:
- Cuisine: Italian, Mexican, Asian, etc.
- Cooking time: under 30 minutes, 30–60 minutes, etc.
- Difficulty: Easy, Medium, Advanced
- Main protein: chicken, beef, tofu, fish, etc.
- Appliance: Instant Pot, slow cooker, blender, etc.
These are temporary — they stay active while you browse and reset when you leave Explore. They don't change your diet or your Food World.
Finding More Recipes for Your Diet
Your Food World grows as you follow more creators, brands, and stores — all free.
- Follow creators who cook your way. Following is always free. You get 3 free recipes from every creator you follow, kept forever. If you want a creator's full catalog, you can subscribe to them in the app (creator-set price, most $2.99–$9.99/mo) — a separate, optional choice that's independent of PrepSmart+.
- Follow brands and stores. Recipes from the brands, stores, and appliances you follow flow into your Food World too.
- Use search. Search by ingredient (e.g., "chickpea" or "salmon") to find recipes with specific foods.
- Check our diet guides. Deep dives for AIP, Keto, Vegan, and other popular diets.
Still Can't Find What You're Looking For?
- Request a diet. If your diet isn't in the list yet, use the request a diet row — that's how the list keeps growing.
- Contact support. If you think a recipe is miscategorized, or you're not finding what you need, let us know.
